Nvidia Unveils First Mobile Super Chip

Nvidia unveiled a new chipset designed to give your car an autopilot.
Dubbed Drive CX, Nvidia’s car computing platform was unveiled ahead of CES 2015. According to the company, it will be compatible with QNX, Linux and Android car operating systems.

Nvidia boss Jen-Hsun Huang said he can see a future where the sensors and radar currently used in many new cars is replaced with video cameras. Drive CX will be crucial to achieving that future, according to Huang.

The system is powered by dual Tegra X1’s – which were also unveiled at the show. Together, they deliver 2.3 teraflops (yes, teraflops) of power in a mobile chip. According to Nvidia, that is enough to power 12 cameras recording dual 4K at 30 frames per second.

That’s crucial, because according to Nvidia the high-quality video is needed in order for the car’s brain to tell the difference between a pedestrian and a car.

The company also spoke about a “neural network” that is able to distinguish and identified cars based on the make and model.

“We believe future cars will be the most advanced computers in the world,” said Huang.

Nvidia dubbed the Tegra X1 as “the world’s first mobile super chip”. It has 256 processor cores, a 64-bit CPU and the ability to record and process 4K video.
