Data from Net Applications appears to indicate that the Google software accounted for 17.5% of all desktop internet traffic in March, a fraction more than Firefox's 17.2%.
Microsoft's Internet Explorer ended the month as market leader, seizing a 58% share of all desktop traffic. While this figure marked a slight decline from February, it also represented a year-on-year increase.
Breaking the figures down to specific browser versions, Internet Explorer 8 led the way with a 21% share of the market, followed by Internet Explorer 11 on 15.7%, and Google Chrome 33 on 12.6%.
Mozilla is currently embroiled in controversy over the appointment of its new CEO Brendan Eich, whose support for anti-gay marriage legislation has led to calls for his resignation.
March's figures mark the first time that Google Chrome has edged out Firefox.
