LG will include fingerprint scanning technology in all of its smartphones going forward, according to reports.
The company has reportedly chosen to feature the technology in all of its 2014 handsets, starting with the LG G Pro 2. The claim comes from Korean-based ET News.
According to the publication, LG chose to back fingerprint scanning technology over iris scanning because of concerns over its ability to work in certain conditions, such as darkness.
Rival Samsung is understood to have ditched the technology in the Galaxy S5 for the same reason, at least for the time being.
The first smartphone that LG is expected to release is the follow up to the LG G Pro. The handset is widely credited as giving Google the confidence to award almost off of its Nexus contracts to the South Korean company.
According to reports, the phone will surface as early as next month at Mobile World Congress. Other rumours suggest it will come with a 5.9-inch quad-HD display.
It will be followed by the LG G3 in May. LG’s flagship smartphone for 2014 is expected to arrive around a month after Samsung’s 2014 flagship smartphone hits shelves.
It is rumoured to come with a quad-HD display, an octa-core process and a 16 megapixel camera, in addition to the fingerprint scanner.
Fingerprint scanners have begun to take off as companies look for ways to make their phones less attractive to criminals.
The New York State Attorney has previously warned that, they will fine companies that fail to take action to help combat the wave of smartphone thefts currently plaguing the state.
