We Hope This Will Be The Last Of Such Strikes- NANS President

The President, National Association of Nigerian Students  (NANS),  Mr Yinka Gbadebo, on Friday expressed the hope that the Nation’s universities would no longer be affected by incessant strikes.
Gbadebo spoke with newsmen in Lagos on telephone, against the backdrop of the return of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) members to classes.
The union had on Tuesday announced the suspension of its strike which had been on since July 1, following a Memorandum of Understanding it signed with the Federal Government.
Gbadebo commended both parties for reaching an agreement which led to the suspension of the strike and said he hoped it would mark the end of incessant strikes in the tertiary institutions.
"While appreciating the effort of the Federal Government in meeting the demands of our lecturers, it is hoped that this would be the last strike of its kind," he said.
The NANS president urged all other stakeholders to carry out their own responsibilities to make the tertiary institutions better.
He regretted that the strike lasted as long as it did, disrupting the academic calendar of public tertiary institutions, noting that it was a setback for the students.
Gbadebo said that the students were not against ASUU’s demands but the length of the strike took its toll on them.
"The 169-day strike by ASUU greatly destabilised Nigerian students and some took to various vices due to idleness," he said.
The NANS president urged the FG and ASUU to ensure that all areas of the agreement between them were implemented for the advancement of higher institutions in the country.
