If you own an Apple device that was
released with (or made the bump to) an iteration of iOS 7, there's a bit of good news for you, especially if you're keen on exploring the "darker
side" of your device.
Jailbreaking one's tablet or smartphone is hardly a "bad" thing to do. Yes, jailbreaking your
tablet is technically still illegal (you're welcome to modify your phone to install other, third-party
apps to your heart's content), but it's not as if the police are going to kick down your door and
demand to see that your iPad is only loaded with App Store apps.
The industrious Evasi0n team released its official iOS 7 jailbreaking application (for Windows and OSX) this morning. So long as you have approximately five minutes to spend, iTunes
installed, and a USB cable to connect your iWhatever to your computer, then you should be
just about ready to run the process that allows you to install non-Apple-approved software of all kinds
onto your device.
We say "just about," as there are some quirks to jailbreaking that are worth knowing about before
you start trying to jailbreak your device. First off, it's strongly recommended that you backup your
particular device using iTunes or iCloud before attempting to jailbreak, just in case something
goes wrong. If you're using a lock passcode on your device, you'll also want to disable that. And if
you're performed an over-the-air update for iOS 7 at any point in your device's life, restore back to
iOS 7.0.4 before you run the jailbreak.
And, of course, it's recommended that you don't do anything on your system while the jailbreak app
works its magic. You could, but the finicky process doesn't really need anything else bothering it during the approximately five-minute
affair. A note on that: Jailbreaking your device
using the evasi0n app is as easy as clicking the "Jailbreak" button and letting it run, in case you're
concerned that you have to perform some arcane, command-line instructions to "hack" your iDevice.
Apple, as you might expect, frowns on the jailbreaking process. So much so, that it has its
own support document online detailing all the things that could happen to your iDevice should
you go through with the process.
"It is also important to note that unauthorized modification of iOS is a violation of the iOS end-
user software license agreement and because of this, Apple may deny service for an iPhone, iPad,
or iPod touch that has installed any unauthorized software," Apple writes .
